Client: Schreiber Foods

Schreiber Foods is a global dairy company seeking to modernize its legacy Oracle-based platform. The existing monolithic system was challenging to scale and maintain, constraining both internal operations and third-party subscriber integration. To support future growth and agility, the company aimed to adopt a modular, scalable, cloud-native architecture using AWS.

Client challenge

Our client faced significant limitations with its Oracle-based application platform, which relied heavily on PL/SQL. The monolithic architecture made scaling difficult and hindered feature updates. Additionally, the platform’s reliance on on-premises infrastructure created operational inefficiencies and limited its ability to support third-party subscribers effectively. To overcome these challenges, Schreiber sought to transform its platform into a flexible, modern SaaS solution that could accommodate future growth and meet evolving business needs.

Our solution

To address the client’s challenges, the solution involved migrating from a monolithic Oracle platform to a modular, microservices-based architecture on AWS. The modernization effort focused on serverless technologies and included the following components:

  • Serverless architecture: AWS Lambda and API Gateway were implemented to create a cost-efficient, scalable serverless application environment.
  • Containerized services: Amazon EKS and Fargate were used to manage microservices, improving scalability and easing application deployment.
  • GenAI-supported code migration: Legacy PL/SQL code was rewritten in Python with the support of generative AI tools like Q for Developer and Co-Pilot, accelerating the transformation process.
  • Modular product architecture: The platform was restructured into a modular design, enabling faster development, easier updates, and support for third-party integration.
  • Future database optimization: The Oracle database will eventually be migrated to Amazon Aurora to enhance performance and reduce operational complexity.

Results

The project delivered significant operational and business benefits, including:

  • Scalability: Migrated to a serverless architecture, reducing infrastructure management overhead by 40%.
  • Faster time to market: Modular architecture improved feature development speed by 50%.
  • Cost reduction: Reduced operational costs by 30% through serverless computing and optimized resource usage.
  • Enhanced agility: The new platform supports internal users and third-party subscribers, opening new business opportunities.
